| Kimi Raikkonen won the Australian Grand Prix. This was Kimi's inaugural F1 race in a Ferrari. Kimi led the opening F1 race of 2007 pretty much from start to finish. Kimi replaced Michael Schumacher, Schummy retired last year as the most dominate F1 driver of his era, at Ferrari . "It is special moment with a new team, everything is new, new to win in the first race," Raikkonen said.
Fernando Alonso came in second place. Fernando also changed teams for 2007, to Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, after being world champion at Renault F1 in 2006.
In November of 2006 Lewis Hamilton became Team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes' second driver. On Sunday in Melbourne Lewis Hamilton came in third place and filled the last spot on podium. In 1998 Lewis was signed to the McLaren Driver Development Support program. By 2003, at age 18, Lewis took #1 honors racing in the FormulaRenault UK Series. Fast forward to 2007, and Lewis is sitting next to Fernando for team McLaren Mercedes on the podium! AWESOME!
All in all the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne was a good race to watch. 2006 champ Renault seemed to struggle with grip and couldn’t make any real run at the top spots. Team Red Bull senior driver David Coultard almost decapitated Alex Wurz when he came into a corner way too hot and went prone right over Alex’s car. Nick Heidfeld was pretty fast, but his BMW team cost him positions by taking too long in the pit. Super Aguri looked much faster than last year. Melbourne put on a good show, and attendance was solid at over 300,000 spectators. |
